2010 April, 17th and 18th a meeting about the water activities on the Po river will be held in Torino, with the organization of the "Friends of the river" club. The program include a presentation of Raymonf Varraud about the Italian sea kayak history, a presentation of Mauro and Tatiana about the sea kayak journeys. During the meeting the Around Highlands story telling will run continuously on a wide screen.

Il 17 e 18 aprile 2010 a Torino si terrà il convegno sul Po e sulle attività remiere, organizzato dal Circolo Amici del Fiume. Thanks to Max Milani of the CCM (the organizer of the exhibition in Milan "The canoe explore the world"), the Story Telling conducted by Raymond Varraud about the expedition will be presented at the FICT International Summer Meeting organized by the ASC 4P Kanu Group under the supervision of Arcangelo Pirovano, alias Gengis, at the Camping Du Lac d'Eyglier, from 1st to 15th August 2009.

Over the crest of a big wave Tatiana is surfing around Europe with talks and slide shows about our expeditions to Scotland.

The next 5th June she and Mauro will present the Highlands circumnavigation at

the BibioneKayak 2009 (http://www.bibionekayak.com/bibionekayak.asp?lingua=eng), during an evening with the presence of Nigel Foster.

The 11st June there will be a presentation of the trip at the Libreria

Liberamente in Lecco (Italy) and at the end of June there will be another meeting at the Kayakamp gathering near Tropea.

And more meetings will see our presence...

Slide Show at the Anglesey Sea Kayak Symposium

On thursday May 7th I had the possibility to present the slide show about our kayak trip "Aropund Highlands" at the Anglesey Sea Kayak Symposium, organized by Nigel Dennis & Co (UK).
My english was very poor but I received a lot of compliments for the beautiful photos and for the long trip.
A lot of people was interested in winds, expedition food, plannig tide tables, and some asked me if we have other kayak trips in program (of course, but next will be in a warmer place!).
The meeting was very informal, a lot of people sitted down on the diving room, and we finished the presentation few minutes before the night navigation of the 5 Star Training!
The day after some other people asked me more information about Scotland and it was very exciting for me!
Beautiful experience!

Giovedì 7 maggio ho avuto la possibilità di presentare il nostro viaggio in Scozia alla presenza dei numerosi partecipanti al Simposio di Anglesey organizzato da Nigel Dennis & Co (Galles).
Nonostante il mio inglese raccapricciante, abbiamo ricevuto tantissimi complimenti per la bellezza delle immagini e per il viaggio impegnativo.
Mi hanno poi chiesto se avevamo trovato giornate di vento, se avevamo comperato cibo liofilizzato, se avevamo programmato tutto con largo anticipo e se avevamo in previsione altri viaggi (certo, ma al caldo!).
L'incontro è stato molto informale, seduti sulla moquette della sala comune e ha preceduto di poco il corso 5Star Training sulla navigazione notturna, quindi non ho avuto modo di capire bene se l'eccitazione in sala dipendeva più alle immagini che scorrevano sullo schermo che dalla incipiente pagaiata in mare mosso (molto mosso, tanto che il corso è stato annullato per quella notte!).
Ancora il giorno dopo mi fermavano per chiedermi qualcosa del viaggio in Scozia...
Sono rientrata a casa con tante belle emozioni!

Lo scorso sabato 28 marzo, Mauro Ferro ha ricevuto a sopresa la prestigiosa carica di socio onorario dell'Associazione Sullacqua in virtù del suo essere... "Highlander2009"!

Wow! The article about the expedition is now on paper, on the pages of PAGAIANDO, the FICT magazine.

In the following months we will have two meetings in which we will present our slide show about the trip. The first will be held in Genova, at the Canoa Verde base, at the last saturday of february (28th). On sunday morning the group will go for a paddling in the Camogli area.

For the 7th march we will be in Torino, guests of another kayaking club, to present and comment our pictures.

At the Golden Gate Sea Kayak Symposium I had the honor to present the slide show immediately after the beautiful presentation of the mythical Nigel Dennis, who has shown spectacular photos of his latest expeditions and spoke of the current direction towards which is giong the world of seakayaking.
Sean Morley introduced me to an audience of about 50 people, mostly participants in the symposium. Despite my poor English I could tell the story of our tour around the Scottish Highlands, ripping laughter to those present, especially speaking about damned midges...
An beautiful event, in a very special place.

Al Golden Gate Sea Kayak Symposium ho avuto l'onore di presentare il nostro slide show subito dopo la bellissima presentazione del mitico Nigel Dennis, che ha mostrato delle spettacolari foto delle sue ultime spedizioni ed ha parlato delle attuali direzioni verso cui tende il mondo del kayak da mare.
Sean Morley mi ha presentato ad un pubblico di circa 50 persone, prevalentemente partecipanti al simposio. Nonostante il mio povero inglese sono riuscito a raccontare il nostro viaggio intorno alle Highlands scozzesi, strappando qualche risata ai presenti, soprattutto parlando dei maledetti midges... Un'evento bellissimo, in una località davvero speciale. Grazie a Sean Morley, Jen Kleck e Matt Palmariello per aver organizzato il simposio e un'invito a tutti a partecipare il prossimo anno.

November Meetings

The last weekend (November 2nd)a slide show was held in Trieste, at the sailing club of Muggia, with Tatiana and Mauro talking about the expedition.

The next weekend, november 9, another presentation will be performed in Nettuno, near Rome, at the kayak school of SeaKayakMania.

The 22nd of November the entire team will be present in Milano, to comment the slides about the Around Highlands kayak expedition, one of the few sea kayak events between the mass of withewater kayaking presentations, for the photo-video show called "La Canoa Esplora Il Mondo", 21st edition, organized from the Club Canoe Milan (CCM).

The kayak school Sullacqua will be the place of another presentation from Tatiana and Mauro for 29th (near Varese).

As you can see this is a month with many possibility to meet the team members and talk more about the expedition, see pictures, have a relaxing weekend and knowing new friends.

Lo scorso fine settimana (2 novembre) una proiezione di diapositive si è svolta a Trieste, presso il circolo velico di Muggia, con Tatiana e Mauro che hanno parlato della spedizione.

Il prossimo fine settimana, 9 novembre, un'altra presentazione sarà tenuta a Nettuno, vicino Roma, presso la scuola di kayak SeaKayakMania.

Il 22 novembre, invece, tutti i membri del team saranno presenti a Milano, per commentare le diapositive sulla spedizione Around Highlands, uno dei pochi eventi kayak di mare tra la massa dellle presentazioni di river kayak, per la rassegna foto-video denominata "La Canoa Esplorate Il Mondo", 21a edizione, organizzata dal Canoa Club di Milano (CCM).

La scuola di kayak Sullacqua sarà il luogo di presentazione Tatiana e Mauro per il 29 (vicino a Varese).

Come potete vedere si tratta di un mese con molte possibilità di incontrare i membri del team e parlare di più sulla spedizione, vedere immagini, avere un rilassante week-end e conoscere nuovi amici.

Another island, another meeting

After the Elba Island gathering, where unfortunately we were not able to arrange the slide show, the first next possibility is the VULCANOA MARATHON gathering that will be organized at the Eolian Islands, Vulcano, from 12th to 14th september (info@sottocosta.it).

For now, after a week with some kayakers from Ireland and another one with some students paddlind a short expedition for the Duke of Edinburg award, I finally play with my doughter Paola...

Dopo il raduno dell'Isola d'Elba, dove sfortunatamente non siamo stati in grado di organizzare la proiezione, la prossima prima possibilità è la MARATONA VULCANOA che verrà organizzata alle Isole Eolie, Vulcano, dal 12 al 14 settembre (info@sottocosta.it).

Per il momento, dopo una settimana con alcuni kayaker irlandesi e un'altra con alcuni studenti che hanno pagaiato per una breve spedizione per ottenere il premio del Duca di Edimburgo, finalmente gioco con mia figlia Paola...

Welcome party

The first welcome party was a couple of days ago in Legnano, under Mauro and Tatiana home: a group of friends with Maurizio as a leader attached a banner over the parked car with our kayaks on top. A huge "ADOSSO" was over (dialect form to say more or less "do it now; move on"). After this followed a delightful evening in a pizzeria with rivers of beer. Maurizio and Gotta received at the end of the party a nice couple of boxers with the scottish flag on the back as a thanks for their very important help on keeping alive the blog!

Here in Sicily I had a surprise barbecue party at Salvo's home. Instead of beer there was a good red vine! A beautiful evening answering to the thousands of questions about the sea, the kayak, the people, the tiredness, the animals of Scotland. There was also the little Paola, collapsed sleeping just few minutes before midnight.

It is wonderful be back home to tell our adventures to friends. I'm starting to think that this could be a good reason to travel...

Il primo festeggiamento di benvenuto è stato alcuni giorni fa a Legnano, sotto la casa di Mauro e Tatiana: un gruppo di amici capitanati da Maurizio hanno attaccato uno striscione alla macchina parcheggiata con i nostri kayak sul tetto. Un enorme "ADOSSO" campeggiava sullo striscione.

Dopo questa sorpresa è seguita una deliziosa serata in una pizzeria con fiumi di birra. Maurizio e Gotta hanno ricevuto alla fine della serata un grazioso paio di boxer con la bandiera scozzese sul didietro come ringraziamento per aver tenuto così vivo il blog!

Qui in Sicilia ho avuto un barbecue party a sorpresa a casa di Salvo. Invece della birra c'era un ottimo vino! Una bellissima serata a rispondere alle centinaia di domande circa il mare, il kayak, le persone, la stanchezza, gli animali di Scozia. Ed era presente anche la piccola Paola, crollata dal sonno poco prima di mezzanotte.

E' bellissimo tornare a casa e poter raccontare le proprie avventure. Mi viene da pensare che si parte per questo...

Celebration!

Yesterday afternoon we get the bus for Fort William and celebrated the good end of our trip in a restaurant, tasting at the end a scottish local wiskie! After the dinner we had the time to burn the alcool in our blood because there were three miles to walking before reaching the camping from wich we started one month ago and where we leaved the car. Mauro drived the 110 km to Inverness until 2:30 in the morning, after wich we collapsed into our tents in the Banchrew campsite (few km west of Inverness).

We are beginning to realize that the trip is ended and it is glorious and sad in the same time. Many friends called and gived messages of congratulations to us, waiting for more pictures and more stories about the trip.

The next meeting is on Elba island for the Maremarathon gathering, where we will show a first selection of pictures. Don't you miss the meeting!

Ieri pomeriggio abbiamo preso il bus per Fort William ed abbiamo celebrato il buon esito del viaggio in un ristorante, assaggiando alla fine un wiskie scozzese locale! Dopo la cena abbiamo avuto il tempo di smaltire l'alcool camminando per 3 miglia prima di raggiungere il campeggio dal quale eravamo partiti un mese fa e dove avevamo lasciato l'auto. Mauro ha guidato per i 110 km ad Inverness fino alle 2:30 di mattina, dopo di che siamo crollati nelle nostre tende nel campeggio di Banchrew (pochi km ad ovest di Inverness).

Stiamo iniziando a realizzare che il viaggio e' finito ed e' una sensazione grandiosa e triste allo stesso tempo. Molti amici ci hanno chiamato o scritto messaggi di congratulazioni, aspettando piu' foto e piu' storie circa il viaggio.

Il prossimo appuntamento e' all'isola d'Elba per la Maremarathon, dove mostreremo una prima selezione di immagini. Non perdete l'appuntamento!

Our time is expired and we realize that Caledonian Canal require too much time with gates and headwinds. Inverness is our final destination. Around Highlands is done!

For now we try to give you just a picture, our internet link is very slow and we have only few minutes... more will follow!

Non abbiamo più tempo e ci siamo accorti che il Caledonian Canal ci prenderebbe troppo tempo fra chiuse e vento contrario. Inverness è il nostro punto di arrivo. Il periplo delle Highlands è fatto! Per ora pubblichiamo solo questa foto, la nostra connessione a internet è molto lenta e abbiamo pochi minuti... presto pubblicheremo di più!

Guys i think my everiday posting on this blog ends here. I have to make my escuses to all the bloggers that posted a comment at wich i didn't reply. Most of all i have to apologise for my english. I did my best, i know it's not a good excuse... but that's what i could do. The last thing i would say here is my best compliments to the three great kayakers that did the journey! Thay have done something really new and challenging for an Italian Kayaker. I red somewhere "who dares wins" that's what they did, this is the reason why they succeeded.

ragazzi io penso che i miei post quotidiani su questo blog si concludano stasera. So di non essere stato ne particolarmente tempestivo ne particolarmenteaccurato nelle traduzioni. Credetemi ho fatto il meglio che ho potuto. Mi scuso con tutte le persone che hanno fatto dei commenti ai post a cui non ho risposto, sono sicuro che ci penseranno i membri della spedizione nelle prossime settimane. Un ultima cosa: le mie più vive e sentite congratulazioni ai tre grandissimi kayakisti che hanno compiuto questa impresa. Secondo me hanno scritto una pagina di storia nel kayak da mare italiano! Mi sembra di aver letto da qualche parte che "Chi osa vince", loro hanno osato e hanno raggiunto il loro obbiettivo.

Position: N57°41.665' - W04°00.521'. We paddled only 17km with a stop at Balintore for water and food, surrounded by a cloud of kids. We met a group of bottlenose dolfins at the beginning of Cromarty Firth. Tatiana is feeling fine and is shure not to be pregnant. It's raining since we landed and we are chatting from a tent to another.

Posizione: N57°41.665' - W04°00.521'. Fatti contro vento solo 17 km con una sosta a Balintore per rifornimento di acqua e viveri, circondati da un nugolo di bambini curiosi e vivacissimi, incontrati i bottlenose dolfins all'ingresso del Cromarty Firth. Tatiana sta bene e dice di non essere incinta. Piove da quando siamo sbarcati e ci parliamo dalle tende.

I called Francesco few minutes ago. Everything is good on the field, most of the equipment is wet and in the last days they got cold weather. The team landed on a rocky and steep beach, to get the kayaks on the high tide mark they used some woods to make sledges and move the boats. The midges are quite present so Francesco is having dinner in his tent. For the rest everything is fine, they crossed the last cape before Inverness! Crossing the bay they shortnened the trip by one day, at least! We spoke even about the channel to Fort William, Francesco told me it wasn't their main goal to paddle even that. When they will reach Inverness they will take a decision about it. The group is in sight of Inverness and they could reach the city even tomorrow. I have my fingers crossed for good luck!

Ho parlato pochi minuti fa con Francesco, dopo aver ricevuto il loro SMS. Tutto bene dai membri della spedizione. Nei giorni scorsi ha piovuto molto, le pioggie leggere "light showers" che io leggevo sul sito dell BBC erano realtà acquazzoni intermittenti! Tatiana non sembra essere molto in forma, ma stasera si sentiva già meglio. Sono sbarcati su una spiaggia formata da grossi ciotoli, abbastanza ripida per giunta. Per spostare i kayak sopra il livello dellì'alta marea hanno dovuto improvvisare degli scivoli fatti con legna trovata sul posto. Sono ricomparsi i midges e Francesco, che sembra essere la loro preda preferita, stava nuovamente cenando in tenda. Hanno tagliato da Brona a Tarbat Ness, questo gli ha permesso di guadagnare un giorno buono di navigazione. Mi ha detto che avevano mare di poppa e che la traversata non sembra sia stata particolarmente impegnativa. Abbiamo parlato anche del canale che separa Inverness da Fort William. Hanno calcolato che sarebbero necessari tre giorni per percorrelo, ma per la verità non sarebbe un loro obbiettivo primario. Qunaod raggiungeranno Inverness decideranno il dafarsi. Di fatto i nostri sono in vista di Inverness e potrebbero (notate bene POTREBBERO) raggiungerla già domani... Teniamo tutti le dita ben incrociate e aspettiamo news da loro.

Duncansby Head

We thinked to stop in Wick town just to have a special party after passing through the Pentland Firth. Yesterday we covered 41 km and today we hope to do almost the same, also if the crossing 5 km far from the coast to Hess Head lighthouse wasn't easy for the 30 knots wind from NW (and gusts up to 35 knots) and big waves. We stopped at Wick after 18 km and we ate a lot of food in a restaurant. The tension has dropped down after Duncansby Head, as like as energies and we trust on the following days of following winds to arrive at Inverness as soon as possible.

Abbiamo pensato di fermarci a Wick per festeggiare il passaggio attraverso il Pentland Firth. Ieri abbiamo percorso 41 km ed oggi contiamo di fare lo stesso anche se la traversata 5 km al largo fino al faro di Hess Head non e' stata facile per i 30 nodi di vento da NW con raffiche fino a 35 e grosse onde. Ci siamo fermati a Wick dopo aver percorso 18 km e abbiamo mangiato molto cibo in un ristorante. La tensione e' calata dopo Duncansby Head, cosi' come le energie e confidiamo nei venti di poppa per i prossimi giorni per arrivare il piu' presto possibile ad Inverness.

A strong wind is still blowing from West through the Pentland Firth, in the night it increased and I had to get out to collect stones to better fix the tent! Sand is everywhere: tent, sleeping bag, stoves, dry bags, clothes...
Today we walked to Castletown and than Tatiana walked toward east to look for some "crafts" (old stone houses) and me and Mauro take a bus to Thurso. We hope to found intact our camp when we will come back to the beach.
The sea is covered by white caps, Orkney islands are no more visible, grass fields seem to flow. One more day on land and we get crazy! We will try to drink a Best this evening...

Un forte vento sta ancora soffiando da ovest attraverso il Pentlan Firth, nella notte e' aumentato e io son dovuto uscire a raccogliere sassi per fissare meglio la tenda! La sabbia e' dappertutto: tenda, sacchiletto, stoviglie, sacche stagne, vestiti...
Oggi abbiamo camminato fino a Castletown e poi Tatiana e' andata verso est a cercare alcuni "craft" (antiche case in pietra) e io e Mauro abbiamo preso un autobus per Thurso. Speriamo di trovare intatto il nostro campo quando torneremo alla spiaggia.
Il mare e' coperto da creste bianche, le isole Orcadi non sono piu' visibili, i campi d'erba sembrano fluire. Un altro giorno a terra e diventiamo pazzi! Proveremo a bere una Best stasera...

This morning I get the weather forecast from BBC4 radio to know that the wind was starting to blowing from SW force 6-7 and then rotating west to gale force (8). We decided to avoid paddling across the Pentland Firth with such a wind and reached again our sleeping bags. After breakfast we walked 5 km back to Thurso.
In the last two days we performed two times to paddle 46 km and a forced rest day is welcome. But now we have only 10 days remaining and we are warried about not reaching Fort William in time. A lot of encounters with dolphins, thousands of birds and always sheeps waiting for us on shore. This time also some cows!
To Fiona, sadly we do not have the time to cross to Orkney islands! It will be the next time...

Murkle, baia di Dunnet.
Questa mattina ho ascoltato le previsioni meteo su radio BBC4 per apprendere che stava iniziando a soffiare il vento da SW forza 6-7 che sarebbe ruotato ad ovest forza 8 (burrasca). Abbiamo deciso di evitare di pagaiare attraverso il Pentland Firth con questo vento ed abbiamo raggiunto nuovamente i nostri sacchi letto. Dopo la colazione abbiamo camminato per 5 km fino a Thurso (piu' l'ultimo km in autostop).
Negli ultimi due giorni abbiamo percorso due volte 46 km e un riposo forzato non ci dispiace. Ma adesso ci rimangono solo 10 giorni di viaggio e siamo preoccupati di non poter raggiungere Fort William in tempo. Un sacco di incontri con delfini, migliaia di uccelli e sempre pecore ad aspettarci a terra. Questa volta anche le mucche!
A Fiona, purtroppo non abbiamo il tempo di traversare fino alle isole Orcadi! Sara' per la prossima volta...

We are still paddling surrounded from a variety of differents birds wich fly around us and make a lot of incredible sounds that we are starting to recognize. I have never seen so much dolfins near my kayak and i have never done so many photos, mostly to the seals! This beatifoul creatures dive into the sea when they spot us. The last 14km with opposing current and a big following sea, we avoided the tidal race at Brims Ness passing between the rocks near the shore. We enjoied a worm and windless sunset without midges. I'm starting to miss seriously my daughter Paola that is moving her first steps without me. In the meantime the fix on my seat is giving up....

Position: N58^33.140' - W04^04.221'. We paddled 46km and now we are in Armadale Bay. This morning we had following current and front wind, in the afternoon the wind becomung soth changed direction but the current slowed us down very nuch. So we had to paddle till 8.30 in the afternoon... more than 10 hours of kayaking today. The beach is very steep, there are some midges and we are all quite tired but the morale is high. The day off was a medicine for us! A big kiss to my wife Barbara for her birthday today.

Mattinata con corrente a favore e vento contrario, poi è arrivato un caldo vento da sud ma la corrente ci ha rallentato tanto da farci pagaiare fino alle 20:30, per un totale di più di 10 ore in kayak. We Passed Cape Wrath, the boys of the expedition are taking a day off while the girls (me!) are enjoing a little adventure in the cave of Smoo with the help of a nice polyglot. Then we (me and the nice scottish) headed for Balnake Hill Cfraft Village, an old military base wich, thanks to painters, sculptors has become a magic and very striking place. After that i headed back to the tent. I walked for 5 miles in the fog, passing on dunes full of rubbit's nests. We i got into the tent i soon discovered that the fog did the permanent to my hairs!

La componente maschile della spedizione si concede1 giorno di meritato riposo mentre quella femminile si lancia all'avventura via terra prima nell'esplorazione della Grotta di Smoo con il gommone di 1 simpatico scozzese poliglotta e poi alla volta del Balnake hill Craft Village, 1 vecchia base miliare che l'estro artistico di pittori, scultori e tessitori ha trasformato in1luogo magico carico di suggestione! Tornata in tenda lungo 1 sentiero di 5 miglia tra le dune traforate di tane di conigli scopro che la nebbia fitta mi ha lavato e messo in piega i capelli...

Finally we found an internet point! We decided to stay one day on land also if the sea conditions are very good to go, just to relax and clean our bodies and clothes.

We want to say many tanks to all the people who are helping and encouraging us with their messages and above all Maurizio and Marco (The Gotta) that give us the weather situation and do all the blog job.

Here there are some of the images from the difficult launching in Sandwood Bay to the passage of Cape Wrath and the last tent site we found, before the local camping owner runned to us to tell that we cannot stay there, make us dismantling the camp to move on his camping site...

Finalmente abbiamo trovato un internet point! Abbiamo deciso di fermarci per un giorno a terra, anche se le condizioni del mare sono ottime per navigare, per rilassarci e pulire i nostri corpi e i vestiti.

Vogliamo ringraziare tantissimo tutte le persone che ci aiutano e ci incoraggiano con i loro messaggi e soprattutto Maurizio e Marco (il Gotta) che ci forniscono le previsioni meteo e fanno tutto il lavoro del blog.

Our guys today launched from Sandwood Bay, passed Cape Wrath and arrived at Durness. The launching operations had been quite difficult because of the heavy dumpers on the beach. They planned to reach Cape Wrath with low tide, but the current was so strong they arrived with slight anticipation, nothing very important, the tidal streams did not yet formed. The sea before the cape was very rough and chaotic. Tomorrow, even for the predicted bad weather, the team will enjoy their first day of rest. In the group started some little tension, i think mostly because of the long paddling days and the continuous stress of setting and moving the camp, a day off will certainly help ;-). Francesco tomorrow will look for an internet point, i hope he will succeed in his search, so we can have some news directly from him and perhaps some photos. Position today: N58^34.068' W04^44287', today paddled 32km, from the beginning of the voyage 475km (!!!)

I nostri dopo essere partiti da Sandwood Bay hanno doppiato Cape Wrath e si sono fermati a Durness. L'imbarco a Sandwood Bay è stato un po' movimentato perchè c'era un onda lunga molto potente che ha creato non pochi problemi. Si sono imbarcati per giungere a Cape Wrath con la stanca di marea, ma la corrente si è rivelata ancora più forte del previsto e quindi sono giunti con lieve anticipo. Nulla di particolare comunque, le tidal strams sul capo non si erano ancora formate, il mare prima del capo era comunque molto agitato. Domani, anche a causa di una meteo non molto favorevole, si prospetta una giornata di riposo, la prima dalla partenza. Fra i nostri sembra serpeggiare qualche tensione, sicuramente la stanchezza e le lunghe giornate a pagaiare non possono che farsi sentire, stasera cena con lenticche e couscouss! Con un po' di fortuna Francesco dovrebbe trovare un internet point domani, potrebbe quindi mandarci qualche foto o commento di prima mano. Speriamo! Somebody here told us that in this period there are the best weather conditions in the past 20 years here in Scotland! We had dinner with haggis and Guinness.

Position: N57^53.071' - W05^38.597', Slaggan bay. We paddled for 6 hours without landing, until the headwind didn't get too strong to proceed. We had a long leg with opposing currents and eddylines at Rubha Rèidh. We repaired my seat moving it a little backword. Someone asks about the kayak, we can say that we are using the 526 ( http://www.seakayakdesign.it/contenuti.asp?page=526 ) close to its loading and seawothiness limits, and it's doint the job very well! Tomorrow morning wakeup again at 4 o'clock because off the 14 knots wind from E. Today we paddled for 21 km.

Posizione: N57^53.071' - W05^38.597', Slaggan Bay. Abbiamo pagaiato per quasi 6 ore senza scalo finché il vento contrario non è diventato troppo forte per proseguire. Luogo tratto con corrente contraria e mulinelli a Rubha Rèidh. Abbiamo riparato il mio sedile spostando il punto di attacco più indietro. Visto che qualcuno ci chiede dei kayak, rispondiamo solo che stiamo testando il 526 ( http://www.seakayakdesign.it/contenuti.asp?page=526 ) ai limiti delle sue possibilità di carico e di tenuta al mare e fino ad ora si è comportato egregiamente. The Team passed the straight between Skye and Scotland. Tatiana told me they where quite worried about the currents, but everything has gone in the right way. Now the team has set up the camp on a nice hill in this position: N57^19.147' - W05^42.096'. Everything is working fine but they are quite in late because of the head winds. For the moment the biggest problem are the midges, mostly for Francesco. But for all the rest everything is working fine. Today they spotted Gordon Brown on the water, but couldn't get in contact. Later the team got in contact with his wife, she gave to our friends some very usefoul informations about the strait and how to cross it.

Questa sera ho avuto la sempre graditissima sorpesa di una chiamata dai nostri. Il morale sembra essere sempre alto, anche se i ritardi sulla tabella di marcia incominciano a essere consistenti. Per questo hanno dovuto cercare di accorciare il viaggio passando all'interno di Skye. L'altro ieri Tatiana e Mauro hanno avuto un incontro ravvicinato con una tidal race. Tatiana mi ha semplicemente detto "era una doppia lavatrice! non ci ho capito niente!" Comunque ne sono usciti a testa alta ;-). Per il resto tutto bene, hanno passato lo stretto tra Skye e la costa e hanno piantato il campo a N57^19.147' - W05^42.096'. Il problema più grosso per ora sono le Midges, per il resto tutto bene!

Today rain, wind and current against: in 10 hours we have done 42 km. We decided to cut inside in the hope of recovering, we have only 22 days remaining! Landed in a beach with billions of midges that make noise like rain beating on the tent: we are becoming mad! Position of yesterday night: N57 ^ 10,192 '- W05 ^ 46,320'. We are still waiting for the current tide that leads northward through the Kyle Rhea, between Skye and the rest of Scotland with flows of over 5 knots and reels. It's the hard life of kayakers!

Siamo nella costa sud-orientale dell'isola di Skye. Oggi pioggia, vento e corrente contrari, in 10 ore abbiamo percorso 42 km. Sempre più distrutti, abbiamo deciso di tagliare all'interno nella speranza di recuperare: ci rimangono solo 22 giorni! Sbarcati in una spiaggia con miliardi di midges che fanno rumore di pioggia picchiando sulla tenda: da pazzia! Posizione della notte di ieri: N57^10.192' - W05^46.320'. Siamo fermi in attesa della corrente di marea che porta verso nord attraverso il Kyle Rhea, lo stretto tra Skye e il resto della Scozia con flussi di oltre 5 nodi e mulinelli. Hi guys i spoke with both Mauro and Francesco, trying to pass them all the info i have for the weather forecast. They have the normal whf radio but it's not very comfortable because of the time of trasmission. They met seals, puffins and other birds. For the moment the weather is excellent and the sea is good. The wind is still against them, but it's not a real problem... at least for the moment. For the next two days they will have strong winds to fight with, but i know they are well trained for this. I called them by phone half an hour ago and they were having a sunbath on the beach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no comment! Today's position is: N56^36.704' - W06^15.219' Port na Ba, Isle of Mull

Salve a tutti, ho parlato al telefono sia con Mauro che con Francesco, cercando di passargli tutte le informazioni riguardo alla meteo locale che nel frattempo sono riuscito a raccogliere. Ovviamente i nostri sono dotati di una radio VHF con cui possono sentire le previsioni, però sembra che questo non sia un modo molto comodo per avere queste info, soprattutto a causa degli orari delle trasmissioni. Hanno incontrato foche puffins e altri uccelli di mare. Per il momento hanno avuto una meteo eccellente e questa è un ottima cosa, purtroppo continuano ad esserci venti contrari abbastanza forti, però i nostri sono ben allenati e mi sembra che non stiano patendo troppo la cosa. Yesterday evening i had the pleasure to speak directly with the team and to hear from their own voice what is the situation. They told me everything is working fine at the moment. They got some contacts with the local animals and this is not always a good thing, the midges particulary are very friendly and leave evident signs of their passage!
For the rest everything seems to work well, in this period they can work with the tide during the day, so they have not to paddle during the night or in uncomfortable hours. The team was very happy about the success of the blog and all the hits it's collecting (yesterday we passed the 100 mark!) and are appreciating very much your warm support, so if you like to let them know something please don't hesitate to contact me, i will forward your messages promptly. We are working on a web page to send them SMS directly, but for the moment we aren't ready yet.
In the next days they expect to find an internet point and to post something by themself.
Only one thing: We are not aware of a service that can send SMS with weather forecast for the scotland region, if that type of service is available it will be a great source of precious informations for them. If you know a service of this type please contact me.

E così finalmente ieri sera sono riuscito a parlare direttamente con i nostri eroi. Mi hanno detto che va tutto bene, li ho trovati con il morale molto alto e non mi hanno segnalato particolari prblemi. Hanno già fatto conoscenza con la fauna locale, in particolare i pestiferi midges che quando passano lasciano il segno. Per fortuna recentemente il vento non manca e questo non è un male, in presenza di questo infatti i pestiferi insetti non riescono a volare e lasciano in pace i nostri eroi.
Per il momento quindi tutta ordinaria amministrazione, nei prossimi giorni i nostri dovrebbero riuscire a entrare in contatto con un internet point e a scriverci qualche cosa di loro pugno... speriamo a breve.
Ragazzi gli avventurieri apprezzano molto il vostro supporto e il successo che sta avendo il blog (ieri abbiamo superato le 100 visite!) quindi se volete scrivergli qualche cosa non esitate a contattarmi, gli inoltrerò il prima possibile i vostri messaggi! Con Marco stiamo lavorando a una pagina web da cui poter scrivere direttamente a loro, purtroppo però non siamo ancora pronti.
Un unica cosa: Mi hanno chiesto di individuare, se possibile, un servizio di previsioni SMS per la Scozia, qualche cosa tipo il servizio che www.ilmeteo.it offre per il mediterraneo; purtroppo non ho ancora individuato questo servizio, se qualcuno di voi lettori ne fosse a conoscenza e potesse usarmi la cortesia di segnalarmelo lo apprezzerei molto.

Today we will give a presentation of our expedition and we had just the time to attach the stickers of our sponsors over the three kayaks. The weather is cloudy and there is an intermittent thin rain. Raimond asked us to go in the water to take some pictures but we looked at him with wide open eyes, thinking to store all our gear totally wet into the car before facing a 2500 km long journey to Scotland...

Gli ultimi preparativi stanno occupando le giornate che precedono la partenza.
La capacità di carico dei nuovi kayak SKD526 è tale da consentire una scorta di viveri ed acqua per 4-6 giorni al massimo… riusciamo a stivare nei gavoni non più di 10 litri di acqua a testa, oltre ad una riserva collettiva di un camel bag da 20 litri sistemato sul tappo ovale del gavone di poppa.
Le abitudini alimentari sono difficili da abbandonare, così abbiamo pensato di portare con noi sughi pronti all’arrabbiata e alle olive nere, oltre che una congrua scorta di cous-cous: ottimo sia con il pesce che con le verdure, è molto più pratico della pasta perché cuoce prima e con meno acqua… ho passato due ore l’altra mattina a preparare le bustine da mettere sotto vuoto!
Un po’ di polenta speriamo di poterla insaporire con i rinomati formaggi locali, qualche scatoletta di sardine e sgombri per variare il menù, una considerevole razione di cioccolata (senza la quale non vado mai in viaggio) e dosi di caffè solubile sufficienti per almeno 15 giorni (ma spero che Francesco riesca a stivare una caffettiera!)

Pannelli Solari

Finalmente sono pronti i pannelli solari!
Abbiamo deciso di installarli su due dei tre kayak della spedizione: quello di Mauro, il tecnico del gruppo, e quello di Tatiana, la meno “tecnologica” del gruppo (ma visto che i loro due kayak “dormono” insieme nel laboratorio di Mauro, i lavori sono stati fatti in parallelo). I pannelli solari sono larghi 12 cm e lunghi ben 115 cm; sono stati dapprima ssemblati su un supporto rigido, poi resi stagni annegando nel silicone le giunture ed infine assicurati sul ponte posteriore con elastici fissati ai passa cime; i pannelli caricano una batteria interna alloggiata nel gavone di poppa e dotata di accessori d’auto per ricaricare cellulare, fotocamera, videocamera, lampade frontali, VHF e GPS (oltre che il rasoio elettrico di Mauro!).Un lavoro certosino che ha richiesto a Mauro qualche giorno di attività manuali e concettuali, ma che garantirà a tutti e tre una totale autonomia durante il viaggio!

Stamattina Mauro mi ha sorpresa seduta sul divano con il salvagente indossato sopra al pigiama: ero talmente elettrizzata dall’arrivo dell’attrezzatura che per la prima volta mi sono svegliata prima di lui! Ero intenta ad adattare le stringhe alle giuste misure, a lubrificare le cerniere con l’olio di silicone, a bruciare i pelucchi delle cuciture con l’accendino, a sistemare la carta di identità plastificata nella tasca interna, a mettere in sicurezza tappanaso, fischietto e specchietto di segnalazione… poi toccherà al coltello e alla macchina fotografica, forse anche al camel bag da inserire nella tasca posteriore… e dobbiamo ancora passare in rassegna l’intimo, le moffole, le sacche da lancio, i caschetti, i pantaloni e la giacca d’acqua più accessoriata e strepitosa e sfavillante che abbia mai indossato (nella foto sembro più un grizzly atterrito dai flash!).

Vogliamo ringraziare di cuore Max e Nanni di Gravità Zero per la cura con cui hanno scelto la nostra nuova attrezzatura: è tutto perfetto, altamente tecnologico, curato nei minimi dettagli, con un'ottima vestibilità e perfino in un coordinato cromatico invidiabile!

The trailer was charged this morning, Rino and Peppe will drive north for a first stop on Rome and will continue towards Bibione to participate to the international sea kayak gathering and to the Venice's "Vogalonga". Mauro and Tatiana will be there in the next week and I will reach them the 16th. I packed with my kayak all the paddling equipment, the alcool stove plus a spare little one, the tents for all of us, my sleeping bag and my sandals. Seven days to the start. From now on I will start to write my diary...

Il carrello è stato caricato questa mattina, Rino e Peppe guideranno verso nord per un primo stop a Roma e poi continueranno per Bibione per partecipare al raduno internazionale e alla "Vogalonga" di Venezia. Mauro e Tatiana saranno lì la prossima settimana e io li raggiungerò il 16. Ho caricato con il mio kayak tutta l'attrezzatura per pagaiare, il fornelletto ad alcool più uno piccolo di riserva, le tende per tutti noi, il mio saccoletto e i miei sandali. Paddling tour for kayakers from France

The last five days I was guiding a group of six french kayakers along the south-east coast of Sicily, about 70 km from Siracuse to Portopalo. The paddled distance each day was short but it was a good general test thanks to the continuous head wind and moderately rough sea that we had. Also good the test of the kayak that was full of equipment and food.

Gli ultimi cinque giorni ho guidato un gruppo di sei kayaker francesi lungo la costa sud-est della Sicilia, per circa 70 km da Siracusa a Portopalo. La distanza percorsa giornalmente è stata breve ma è stato un buon test generale grazie al continuo vento di prua e al mare moderatamente mosso che abbiamo avuto. Altrettanto buono il test del kayak che era pieno di equipaggiamento e cibarie.

Gruppo fantastico! Mille grazie a tutti loro.

Cold showers and cold shocks

On the february issue of Sea Kayaker magazine I found an interesting article about cold shocks by Chris Brooks. These shocks seem to cause more fatalities that hypotermia. You can read the on-line article is on http://www.seakayakermag.com/2008/Feb08/cold-shock.htm but on the paper version there is something of more shocking: it is possible to acclimatize yourself to the cold water by taking daily cold showers for about three weeks to reduce the symptoms of cold shock for up about one year!

I've started this practice this morning at half past 5... Will I succeed to survive this treatment?

Sul numero di febbraio della rivista Sea Kayaker ho trovato un articolo interessante sullo shock da freddo scritto da Chris Brooks. Questi schock sembrano causare più fatalità dell'ipotermia. Potete leggere l'articolo on-line su http://www.seakayakermag.com/2008/Feb08/cold-shock.htm ma sulla versione cartacea c'è qualcosa di più schoccante: è possibile acclimatarsi all'acqua fredda facendo docce fredde giornalmente per circa tre settimane e ridurre i sintomi dello shock da freddo per circa un anno!

Ho iniziato questa pratica questa mattina alle 5:30... Sopravviverò a questo trattamento?

Alcantara River

Today I've done few km of the Alcantara river with my friend Pascal. The river is easy and never more than a 3rd degree but it is more than enough for me that want just to play with current, ripples, eddies and standing waves. Looking at the pictures my face is really dramatic jet over a 50 cm step but the dangers are ever presents also in such a river, like a tree across a narrow passage at the corner of a strange dam in which Pascal has lost his paddle... Than there was a steep passage between rocks and with a hole at the end: here after looking for the best way to go I walked down with the kayak over my shoulder... I concluded that the sea is not so dangerous, even when it is furious. Do you agree??

Oggi ho fatto alcuni km del fiume Alcantara con il mio amico Pascal. Il fiume è facile e mai più di un terzo grado ma è più che sufficiente per me che voglio semplicemente giocare con la corrente, le increspature, i mulinelli e le onde stazionarie.

Guardando le foto la mia faccia è veramente drammatica già su un gradino di 50 cm ma i pericoli sono sempre presenti anche in questo tipo di fiume, come un albero attraverso uno stretto passaggio all'angolo di una strana diga nel quale Pascal ha perso la pagaia... Poi c'era un passaggio ripido tra le rocce e con un buco alla fine: qui, dopo aver cercato il modo migliore per passare ho preferito scendere a piedi con il kayak in spalla... Ho concluso che il mare non è mai così pericoloso, anche quando è furioso. Siete daccordo??

Training body and mind (Allenamento)

Two weeks ago Mauro and Tatiana with other friends had paddled the waters of Como's Lake from north to south and vice-versa for a total distance of 40 km! Only thanks to the continuous chatting and the several watching of Gray Kites that were circling above our heads we were able to win the boring flat water reigning over the lake in that days. No wind or waves to give some salt to a 6 hours paddling... So much calm to be monotonous, except for to be captured by the beauty of the rounding landscape, with the summit of the mountain still white capped, the stone bell towers over the old lake's villages and the cypresses around the richest houses... The Lario is pheraphs the most beautiful lake of Italy!
When we coasted the beautiful Balbianello House there was still a thiny sun ray but a grey sky and some drop of rain have reminded us that in Scotland we will found very variable weather and we will face clouds over the landscapes... But if there are so many pictures with green scottish hills and turqouise seas or the silver colored cliffs washed from the sun, there should be some beautiful day also there or not?
The training was useful to understand that long distances leave us not much tired (in body and mind) and also if Tatiana will not have the company to chatting for hours and hours she will survive with the joy of discovering something of new behind each promontory... The hope is to fight the effort thanks to the travel and thousand of surprises that are waiting us.

Due settimane fa Mauro e Tatiana ed altri amici si sono "dilettati" a percorrere il Lago di Como in lungo ed in largo... anzi, sono in lungo, da sud a nord e viceversa... per una percorrenza media giornaliera di 40 chilometri! Se non fosse stato per le chiacchiere fitte fitte e per i continui avvistamenti di nibbi grigi che volteggiavano eleganti sulle nostre teste, non avremmo potuto vincere così facilmente la noia indotta dalla calma piatta che regnava quei giorni sul lago: nè una bava di vento nè una piccola onda a movimentare una pagaiata di 6 ore... tanto tranquilla da risultare quasi monotona... salvo poi essere rapiti dalla bellezza del paesaggio circostante, le cime delle montagne ancora innevate, i campanili di pietra a vegliare sui vecchi borghi in riva al lago, le cime dei cipressi ben curati che svettano sulle ville più ricche... il Lario è forse il più bel lago d'Italia!
Quando abbiamo costeggiato la splendida Villa Balbianello splendeva ancora un timido raggio di sole ma poi il cielo grigio e qualche goccia di pioggia ci han fatto ricordare che in Scozia troveremo "tempo variabile" e dovremo fare spesso i conti con nuvole passeggere che il vento sospinge ad oscurare il panorama... però visto che tante foto ritraggono le verdi colline scozzesi o le azzurre coste scozzesi o le argentee scogliere scozzesi inondate dal sole, ci dovrà pur essere un qualche giorno di bel tempo pure da quelle parti, no?
L'allenamento è servito per capire che le lunghe percorrenze non ci affaticano troppo (nel fisico e nella mente) e anche se Tatiana non avrà compagnia con cui chiacchierare per ore ed ore si rifarà con la gioia della scoperta e la curiosità di vedere cosa si nasconde dietro ogni promontorio... la speranza è quella di vincere la fatica proprio grazie al viaggio e alle mille sorprese che ci riserverà...

Tutto è kayak

L'altra sera mia mamma mi ha invitata al concerto per piano solo di Giovanni Allevi, un timidissimo musicista filosofo che sembra più un sognatore disadattato che un artista affermato... e che naturalmente mi ha subito inspirato una gran simpatia!
Ho comperato il suo libro e l'ho letto d'un fiato... parla di musica, di tasti, di dita che corrono fluide sul pianoforte ma io ho letto anche di kayak, di pagaia, di braccia che si muovono decise sull'acqua... ormai riconduco tutto al kayak e qualcuno, di certo mai madre, penserà che sono malata, ma forse ha un po' influito il mio passato musicale!
Giovanni Allevi scrive: "L'acqua, calma e limpida, riesce nella sua quiete a raggiungere i più remoti e bui interstizi. Con indifferenza sovrumana conquista qualunque spazio, totalmente, senza alcun gesto violento, senza intenzione, così, semplicemente; tutto può sommergere e coinvolgere nel suo naturale silenzio. E ciò che da lei è conquistato, per nulla soffre del suo limpido abbraccio, anzi, quasi si conserva nel cristallino nitore: guadagna in trasparenza e leggerezza. Così le dita non servono più, perdono la funzionalità e il senso di appartenenza: non sono più mie, ma della leggerezza che mi circonda. Siamo la coppia più bella del mondo

Mentre Francesco si diletta nella lettura appassionante di carte nautiche, tabelle di marea e guide turistiche, come si conviene ad un vero "team-leader" avvezzo alle attività intellettuali, noi due facciamo lavori più umili... Tatiana e Mauro, indossata una tuta blu da operaio, legati i capelli ed inforcati gli occhiali, una sera della scorsa settimana si sono dedicati alla sistemazione dei kayak.

Abbiamo personalizzato i nuovi 526 con qualche piccolo ritocco: la mastra del pozzetto montata da un altro modello per accelerare i tempi era da limare perchè il paraspruzzi calzava un po' troppo stretto; poi abbiamo carteggiato i gavoni per far scivolare più facilmente le sacche stagne.
Per l'occasione, avevo anche comperato una bella coppia di guanti da cucina, gialli come si addice ai lavori di kayak, ma poi non sono serviti... penso di tenerli nel pozzetto durante il viaggio, sicura che torneranno utili per pescare e slamare i pesci.

Ora mancano solo gli adesivi di tutti gli sponsor sul ponte e qualche altro "piccolo lavoretto" per sistemare i pannelli solari e poi finalmente i nuovi kayak 526 saranno pronti per il varo!

Solo paddling, poor pictures

With a rough sea and a wind around 20 knots blowing at a large angle towards the beach, I managed to launch trough the breakers just once using a low brace when a big wave crushed under my kayak. The paddling over the rough and sandy water was fine except for the way back against the wind that tooks 20 minutes more than to go (36 min. to go, 56 min. to come back). The paddled coast, from Bruca to Sampieri, is mainly rocky so I sailed a quarter of a mile from the cliffs, to avoid the annoing reflected waves.
During the landing I followed some huge breakers but one of them catched me from the back and the only thing to do was going into the wave in a high bracing position and hold fast. The wave passed and I paddled crazy to the beach, running over some minor surf.
Despite the fact I was alone, the 526 gived me a great safe sensation and the only regreat was that nobody was there taking pictures!

Con il mare mosso e un vento intorno ai 20 nodi che soffiava verso la spiaggia con un ampio angolo, sono riuscito a partire attraverso i frangenti usando appena una volta l’appoggio basso quando una grossa onda si è infranta sotto il mio kayak. La pagaiata sull’acqua mossa e sabbiosa è stata piacevole eccetto che per il ritorno controvento che mi ha fatto impiegare 20 minuti in più rispetto all’andata (36’ per andare, 56’ per rientrare). La costa percorsa, da Bruca a Sampieri, è prevalentemente rocciosa così ho navigato a un quarto di miglio dalle scogliere per evitare la fastidiosa onda di ritorno.
Durante lo sbarco ho seguito alcune onde enormi ma una di queste mi ha preso alle spalle e l’unica cosa da fare è stata buttarsi dentro l’onda nella posizione dell’appoggio alto e tenere duro. L’onda è passata e io ho pagaiato pazzamente verso la spiaggia, correndo sopra alcuni frangenti più piccoli.
Nonostante il fatto che fossi solo il 526 mi ha dato una grande sensazione di sicurezza e l’unico rammarico è stato che non c’era nessuno a fare fotografie!

Books, wind, bike and milk (Libri, vento, bici e latte)

This morning I was occupied on moving books from the Barbara’s grandfather house to home. It has been a good exercise because the books were packed into big plastic baskets that I had to carry into the car from the second floor of a without-elevator-house and then from the car to the corridor of our home.
After lunch, when I arrived at the Bruca’s beach the sea was roaring for a gale force wind and with my friend Vincenzo decided for a hot coffee instead a cold wash into the waves. So I biked back along the coastal gravel road and at home Paola was waiting for her daddy to drink her milk...

Questa mattina ero occupato nel trasloco di libri dalla casa del nonno di Barbara a casa nostra. È stato un buon esercizio perchè i libri erano stipati in cassette di plastica che ho dovuto caricare nella macchina dal secondo piano di una casa-senza-ascensore e poi dalla macchina fino al corridoio di casa nostra.
Dopo pranzo, quando sono arrivato alla spiaggia di Bruca il mare ruggiva per la burrasca e con il mio amico Vincenzo abbiamo deciso per un caffè caldo invece di un freddo bagno nelle onde. Così sono ritornato indietro con la bici lungo la strada sterrata che corre sulla costa ed a casa Paola stava aspettando il suo papà per bere il suo latte...

Sottocosta Excursion

Today the meeting for members of Sottocosta Association was at Punta Secca and our plan was to paddle eastward for about 18 km to reach the Bruca’s beach and the base of Maremotu Kayak School. At the start we were 19 but soon two of the group decided to come back after a unwanted capsize.
The very nice company was eventually reduced at the half of the participants after the lunch break, when the wind kicked up to force 5 or 6, violently pushing the group of paddlers towards the destination.
In all this, I used for the first time the 526 kayak builded for the expedition. More comfortable than the first edition for a new, lower seat and a new cockpit coaming. Very light weathercocking (the kayak was almost empty), great stability, speed and a lot of confidence when into the surf zone.

Oggi l’appuntamento per i soci dell’Associazione Sottocosta era a Punta Secca e il nostro piano era pagaiare per circa 18 km e raggiungere la spiaggia di Bruca e la base della Scuola Kayak Maremotu. Alla partenza eravamo 19 ma presto due del gruppo hanno deciso di rientrare dopo un involontario capovolgimento.
La simpatica compagnia è stata ulteriormente ridotta alla metà dopo la pausa per il pranzo, quando il vento è aumentato fino a forza 5 o 6, spingendo violentemente il gruppo dei pagaiatori verso la destinazione.
In tutto questo, io ho usato per la prima volta il kayak 526 costruito per la spedizione. Più confortevole della prima edizione per un nuovo e più basso sedile e una nuova mastra del pozzetto. Davvero leggera la tendenza ad orzare (il kayak era quasi vuoto), grande stabilità, velocità e molta confidenza quando ci si trova in mezzo ai frangenti.

Mummy-daddy (Mammo)

In these days I look with binoculars for more time to training and planning. That holy woman of my wife Barbara is a teacher and almost all the mornings she works at school, so I have to stay most of daylight time with our daughter Paola, playing with her, preparing food and milk, changing diapers and singing lullaby. In the afternoon, after some jobs I have to do, little time to training for the incoming expedition is remaining. At the end of the day, if I’m still able to stay upright I use the first hours of the night planning over the beautiful 1:50.000 scale maps arrived from the United Kingdom, pilot books and tidal strems atlas. Then very often Paola woke us around half past 5 in the morning, crying for some milk... For sure during the expedition I’ll miss her a lot but I’ll sleep much more!
Now here in Sicily the weather is light windy and wet, with no rain but a lot of humidity for the warm air coming from south-east. The clear sky, cold air and strong wind of the winter, very similar to summer Scotland weather, is gone. Somebody told me that this year there will be a very short summer, with more rain and wind. Should we cross our fingers???

In questi giorni cerco con il binocolo il tempo per allenarmi e pianificare. Quella santa donna di mia moglie Barbara è un’insegnante e quasi tutte le mattine lavora a scuola, così a me tocca stare la maggior parte del tempo diurno con nostra figlia Paola, giocando, preparando pappe e latte, cambiando pannolini e cantando ninna-nanna. Nel pomeriggio, dopo alcuni lavori ceh ho da fare, rimane poco tempo da dedicare all’allenamento per l’imminente spedizione. Alla fine del giorno, se sono ancora in grado di stare su, utilizzo le prime ore della notte per pianificare sulle belle carte in scala 1:50.000 arrivate dal Regno Unito, sui portolani e sugli atlanti dei flussi di marea. Poi molto spesso Paola ci sveglia intorno alle 5 e mezza del mattino, piangendo per un po’ di latte... Sicuramente lei mi mancherà tanto durante la spedizione ma dormirò molto di più!
Adesso qui in Sicilia il clima è leggermente ventoso e umido, senza pioggia ma con molta umidità per l’aria calda che arriva da sud-est. È ormai andato il cielo terso, l’aria fredda e il forte vento dell’inverno, molto simile al clima estivo della Scozia. Qualcuno mi ha detto che quest’anno ci sarà un’estate molto breve, con più pioggia e vento. Dobbiamo incrociare le dita???

Training and planning away from Birthday

Tidal stream atlas, topographic maps, Pilot charts and kayaking guides are in these days my favourite lectures. I have to get confidence with the tidal planning to avoid to paddle against the very fast tidal streams that runs around scottish coasts.
Also the training is very important and I'm planning after running, paddling and gym some whitewater kayaking into the Alcantara River and some sea kayak exits into the Messina Strait, where we have the strongest currents of the Mediterranean sea.
Of course everything is stopped during the first birthday of my daughter Paola!

In questi giorni le mie letture favorite sono gli atlanti dei flussi di marea, le mappe topografiche, le carte nautiche e le guide di kayak da mare. Devo prendere confidenza con la pianificazione delle maree per evitare di dover pagaiare contro i velocissimi flussi di marea che scorrono intorno alle coste scozzesi.

Anche l'allenamento è molto importante e, oltre alla corsa, le pagaiate e la palestra sto pianificando uscite in acqua bianca sul Fiume Alcantara e qualche uscita in kayak da mare nello Stretto di Messina, dove abbiamo le più forti correnti del Mediterraneo.

Ovviamente tutto si ferma per il primo compleanno di mia figlia Paola!

Wild winds, rough conditions and tidal streams

Reading guides and books about Scotland we are learning that some places, like Cape Wrath and Pentland Firth, could be dangerous. The window’s glasses of the lighthouse of Duncansby Head are at 105 meters above sea level and are continuosly crashed by stones thrown by the waves. Here strong winds create waves up to 8 meters high... Pentland Firth, the strait between Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea shows one of the most rough conditions in the world!
Regarding this strait Fiona Whitehead (http://www.rockpoolkayaks.com/fiona/index.htm) in her circumnavigation of Britain and Ireland (2004) writes this notes: “Approaching Duncansby Head stopped in the water to check the GPS. GPS showing 9 knots, started paddling again and it went up to 12 knots! Some tidal stream!“

Leggendo alcune guide e libri che parlano della Scozia stiamo apprendendo che alcuni luoghi, come Capo Wrath e il Pentland Firth, potrebbero essere pericolosi. I vetri delle finestre del faro di Duncansby Head, poste a 105 metri sul livello del mare, sono continuamente sfondati dai sassi scagliati dalle onde. Qui i forti venti creano onde fino a 8 metri di altezza... Il Pentland Firth, lo stretto tra l’Oceano Atlantico e il Mare del Nord, è uno dei luoghi al mondo in cui il mare è più agitato!
Riguardo a questo stretto Fiona Whitehead (http://www.rockpoolkayaks.com/fiona/index.htm) nella sua circumnavigazione della Britannia e dell’Irlanda (2004) scrive queste note: “Avvicinandomi a Duncasby Head mi sono fermata in acqua per controllare il GPS. Mentre il GPS segnava 9 nodi, ho iniziato a pagaiare e la velocità è salita a 12 nodi! Qualche flusso di marea!”

Why the sea water is salty.

Eagerly reading the fine historical novel on the Orkney islands of George Mackay Brown, Tatiana discovered why sea water is salty:

"The King of Denmark had a magic mill called Grotti, that was able to grind everything. But the Grotti mill was so enormous that the stones could rotate only by the mighty arms of Fenia and Menia, two giants girls slaves of the King. The mill ground so much gold that the king was the richest man on earth, but an enemy of Denmark, a gentleman of the sea, came when the royal palace was surrounded by at night and sleep and forced the two Giant girls to grind warriors. Thus the royal palace of Denmark produced blood instead of gold, pearls and diamonds. That lord of the sea Brought with him the Grotti mill, Fenia and Menia and left with a west route. The sea, at that time, was clear as the drops of rain or mountain streams. The lord of the sea that organized a big party to celebrate his triumph and his cooks had a great commitment to roasting pigs and cook salmons in the pan while the horn's pitchers filled with beer passed from hand to hand. "Meat and fish have no taste," said the lord of the sea, half drunk. "Order to the giant girls to grind salt." And it happened that the Grotti mill began to vomits a lot of salt, but so much of that salt that the vessel sank, and with it the lord of the sea, all its crew and the Grotti mill and giant girls. Leggendo avidamente il bel romanzo storico sulle Isole Orcadi dello scozzese George Mackay Brown Tatiana ha scoperto la ragione per cui l'acqua del mare è salata:

Kidnapped

The beauty of a trip is that it can begin long before departure!

Among the "thematic" readings chosen in view of this Scotland trip, Tatiana has found "Kidnapped," a beautiful novel from L. R. Stevenson illustrated by Hugo Pratt.

The amazing drawings of the great Italian artist characterizes and gives life to the sad story of David Balfour, a freckles boy being swallowed up in a vortex of mishaps and fantastic real... During his vicissitudes he encounters a rebellious Scot struggling for the independence of his homeland that assumes the seductive appearance of Corto Maltese...

When the ship which are both prisoners is wrecked, the boy remain alone on a desert island and with low tide he discover that is possible to reach the mainland and soon he find his rebel friend... Private history is interwoven with the history and the imagine of an entire era is offered to the reader in a light and pleasant manner... The attention to detail is almost maniacal, so that the number of pages is printed on the chest of a gull that hovers in the air on a rough seas fraught with a sailing boat... Hugo Pratt had the gift of make the words in designs and is sufficient to look its tables to fully understand the the story and to be catapulted into the Scottish windy lands!

Il bello di un viaggio è che può cominciare molto prima della partenza!
Tra le letture "a tema" scelte in vista del viaggio in Scozia, Tatiana ha scovato "Il ragazzo rapito", un bel romanzo di L.R.Stevenson illustrato da Hugo Pratt.
Il tratto deciso del grande disegnatore italiano caratterizza ed anima la triste storia di David Balfour, un ragazzino lentigginoso e presumibilmente fulvo che viene inghiottito in un vortice di disavventure fantastiche e reali... nelle sue peripezie si imbatte in un ribelle scozzese che lotta per l'indipendenza della sua patria e che assume le sembianze seducenti di Corto Maltese... quando il brigantino sul quale sono entrambi prigionieri fa naufragio, il ragazzo si ritrova da solo su un'isola abbandonata, con la bassa marea scopre di poter raggiungere la terra ferma e presto ritroverà anche il suo amico ribelle... la storia privata si intreccia con la storia collettiva e l'affresco di un'intera epoca viene offerto al lettore in maniera leggera e piacevole... la cura dei particolari è quasi maniacale, tanto che il numero delle pagine è riportato sul petto di un gabbiano che si libra in volo su un mare agitato solcato da un veliero... Hugo Pratt aveva il dono di saper tramutare le parole in disegno e basta scorrere le sue tavole per comprendere appieno la trama del racconto e per essere catapultati nelle ventose terre scozzesi!

526 Sea Kayak Design

Mauro and Tatiana have finally tested the new kayak that will be used for the expedition (526 Sea Kayak Design). The first impressions exchanged with Francesco who had already had the opportunity to test it has been confirmed. The V-hull is directional and stable. The boat is decidedly low on water and the paddling gives a good feeling. The volume is low, about 270 litres, but the load capacity is surprising satisfactory: into the bow and stern leaps are comfortably placed tent and mattress, the central cockpit rounded bulkheads increase the volume of the compartements, low decks allow the storing of safety equipment (pagaie, solar panel, navigation system) without much exposing the kayak to the wind. Maybe the food have to be reduced to three or four days and should make a good basis lyophilisates product, but we stowed our usual reserve of 8-10 litres of water. The spare clothes swollen dry bags were packed into the bow compartment without difficulty. The big round bow hatch and the aft oval one facilitate the loading and stowage of the equipment, these "Kajak Sport" hatches are ponds and soft at the same time, and the day hatch is so easily accessible, even during navigation... Finally, the tilting seat and thigh braces molded into the coaming make sitting comfortable and increase the ability to control the boat...
The first test was very positive... We will be able to tell you more after the periplus of Scottish Highlands!

Mauro e Tatiana hanno finalmente provato il nuovo kayak 526 della SKD per la spedizione alle Highlands.
Le prime impressioni scambiate con Francesco che aveva già avuto modo di testarlo sono state confermate.
Lo scafo è chigliato, direzionale e stabile. La barca è decisamente bassa sull'acqua e la pagaiata trasmette una bella sensazione. Il volume del kayak è ridotto, circa 270 litri, ma la capacità di carico ci ha sorpreso e soddisfatto: gli slanci di prua e di poppa alloggiano comodamente tenda e materassino, le paratie arrotondate del pozzetto centrale aumentano il volume dei gavoni, i ponti bassi consentono di attrezzarli con dotazioni di sicurezza (pagaie, pannello solare, navigatore satellitare) senza esporsi al vento. Forse la cambusa andrà ridotta a tre-quattro giorni e dovremmo fare una buona scorta di prodotti liofilizzati, ma abbiamo stivato la nostra solita riserva di acqua di 8-10 litri. Anche le sacche stagne gonfie di indumenti di ricambio, d'inverno solitamente più ingombranti, sono state sistemate a prua senza difficoltà. Il tappo tondo grande a prua e quello ovale a poppa facilitano il carico e lo stivaggio dell'attrezzatura; i tappi "Kajak Sport" sono stagni e morbidi al tempo stesso, il terzo gavone risulta così facilmente raggiungibile anche in navigazione... Infine, il seggiolino basculante ed il premi cosce della mastra rendono la seduta particolarmente confortevole ed aumentano la capacità di controllo dell'imbarcazione...
Insomma, il primo test è stato molto positivo... al rientro dalla Scozia vi sapremo raccontare di più.

Animal Rescue helps Around Highlands

Animal Rescue is a volunteer association of veterinaria medicians, naturalists and biologists that helps in danger, dangerous or stranded animals.
Giancarlo Albertari, the president of Animal Rescue, wrote us: "I am always an incurable dreamer, with this little contribution I like to imagine that I'll get a shower of Scottish salt water."
The commitment of SKD Adventure Team is to return from the expedition with a good collection of photographic material about animals encountered during the trip... The low population density, the marked relief and the jagged coast makes the Scottish Highlands one of the favorite places for the animal watchers. Paddling silently by kayak over the Atlantic and the North Sea we will have a privileged observation point to admire and photograph whales, sea gulls, grey seals, dolphins and puffins!
Our expedition also wants to promote a respectful way to travel.

Magic paddles for Scotland

I post here about a news directly from the Leader of Around Highland Expedition Francesco Petralia: "Niko De Florio is building for the team the paddles for Scotland. One greenland for each one, and some special storm paddles to use as spares. At the Bibione international kayak simposiium the paddlers will touch their beautiful wooden Avataks when Niko will officially give them to the team during the presentation of the start of the expedition."

Vi riporto questa news da Leader della spedizione Francesco Petralia: "Niko De Florio sta realizzando per il team le pagaie da utilizzare in Scozia. Into an interview released to Ocean Paddler Magazine, Gordon Brown, author of the book "Sea Kayak", give this answer to the question of why Scottish Isles produce so many good and active sea kayakers:

"The west coast is a proper testing ground and if people paddle here in whatever conditions are thrown at them then they either have to become good or give up. Most of the coast has shelter close by and this makes the challenging water easy to access, add the tide races to this and you have a recipe for producing a race of people who are fit for pushing the boundaries of sea kayaking".

In un intervista rilasciata alla rivista Ocean Paddler, Gordon Brown, autore del libro "Sea Kayak", fornisce questa risposta al perchè le isole scozzesi producono così bravi e attivi sea kayakers:

"La costa occidentale è un buon banco di prova e se la gente qui intende pagaiare in qualsiasi condizione deve necessariamente essere all'altezza o rinunciare. La maggior parte della costa ha ridossi vicini tra loro e questo rende le impegnative acque di facile accesso, aggiungete a questo le tidal races e avrete una ricetta per produrre una razza di persone pronte a spingersi ai confini del kayak da mare".

One of the kayaks we will use in north Scotland reached the southernmost coast of Sicily for a test in a perfect windy day! The kayak is neutral under all wind directions, we only need to mount a bilge pump and a compass.

Now that first kayak (with a second one) is stored into the garage of Mauro and Tatiana and in the next week they will load the boats for a further test into the cold waters of the lakes.

As you can see from the picture on the right I received some interesting boxes from TEVA and my office is starting to seem a shoe' shop!

So many things remaining to do before the start! Like all my voyages, I know that a crazy confusion will reign until that moment, the first paddle stroke...

From two to three...

Some days ago Tatiana called and suggested me to sit down before listening what she was saying. I was worried to have to do a solo paddling this summer but the news was good: Mauro join us in the expedition!
To be three is fine, it is a perfect number for a lot of outdoor activities... And, above all, Mauro brings with him a sponsorship of his company!

Alcuni giorni fa Tatiana mi ha chiamato e mi ha chiesto di sedermi prima di stare a sentire ciò che doveva dirmi. Ero preoccupato di dover partire da solo quest'estate ma la notizia era buona: Mauro si sarebbe unito a noi nella spedizione!
Essere in tre è perfetto per molte attività all'aria aperta... E, soprattutto, Mauro porta con se una sponsorizzazione della sua ditta!
